Pavlátová, Andrea ; Havlíček, Tomáš (advisor) ; Blahůtová Kavanová, Klára (referee)
The Development of Tibetan Cultural and Religious Identity among Tibetans Living outside of Historical Tibet The topic of my thesis was to find out changes in Tibetan society inside Tibet and in Tibetan exile in last 50. years and how do changes help to progress social capital. Inside Tibet is problem with high percent of nonliterary and high percent of incoming Han people, which cause that Tibetan people are getting on the edge of society, because they didn't have developed their human potential. The main problem is that Tibetan people don't know Chinese language well and this language is becoming more useful for daily life in Tibetan autonomous region. Tibetans, who are very religious, don't have opportunity to practice Tibetan Buddhism under communistic rule of Chine. Tibetans have to renounce His Holiness dalajlama and deny part of their Tibetan identity. Those reasons influence them to escape into exile. The second part of my thesis is concerned to describe push and pull factors of migration. As I found in materials, the main reasons to escape into exile were political, religion, education, economical problems and renounce dalajlama. In my research, Tibetan didn't divide those reasons to those categories, because they think of those problems in holistic way. The last part of thesis in...

Heroldová, Helena ; Berounský, Daniel (advisor) ; Vokurková, Zuzana (referee)
Goddess Tārā (Sgrol ma in Tibetan) belongs among the most popular protective deities of Tibetan Buddhism. She appeared in India in about the 8th century, and later her worship spread to Tibet and Mongolia, and eventually to China and Japan. At present, she becomes a well-known deity even in modern Western Buddhism. This work summarizes the basic information concerning the development of the iconography of the goddess Tārā. The first part provides an overview of primary sources, in particular texts written by Tibetan authors from the 12th to the 17th centuries. This part also includes an annotated translation of one of the fundamental texts of Tārā worship, The Praise of Twenty-one Tārās. The second part is devoted to the goddess Tārā in traditional religious painting. Especially, the iconographical rules for Tārā paintings are described. This part contains the Catalogue of thirty paintings of Tārā dated to the 20th century from the area of modern-day Mongolia that are kept in the collection of the National Museum-Náprstek Museum in Prague. The paintings show the transformation of the traditional iconography. A Conclusion reflects on the role of the goddess Tārā in modern Western Buddhism, as well as development and changes in her iconography.

The Thangkas - Tibetian Paintings with a Story
Gyaltso, Lenka ; Czumalo, Vladimír (advisor) ; Bělka, Luboš (referee)
Thangkas are Tibetan paintings which can be explained in many different points of view. Their meaning is different for Buddhist practitioners, painters, collecters, arts historians or researchers. This thesis should introduce the variaty of perspectives. The composition of the painting is given by the patron, artist or follows the Buddhist sacred scripts. Preparing the base, drawing, using colour pigments, outlining and doing final details belong to the process done by the master himself or partially by his students or monk or layman helpers. For impowering the thangka for the Buddhist praxis is necessary to do a sacrification ceremony by an educated monk. It is a religious and also social event connected with the painting. Thangkas are then used for the visualisation of figures of the Tibetan pantheon, mostly peaceful and wrathful deities. They are used in the monasteries, temples, home shrines or altars, are part of Buddhist ceremonies and festivals shown to the audience hung on the terraces or carried by the monks. Their vivid topics and colours encharme not only monks and lamas but also laymen. The expression differs according to local schools influenced by artists of Kashimiri, Bengali, Nepalese or Chinese origin. Tibetan painting style was probably created in the second half of 15th century...
Comparison of Karmapas statements by critical discourse analysis in the light of postmaterialistic values concept defined by Inglehard
Doubková Brodská, Barbora ; Váně, Jan (advisor) ; Knotková - Čapková, Blanka (referee)
This dissertation is mainly focused on schism in the Karma-kagjü school. The death of the 16th Karmapa Rangjung Rigpe Dorje († 1981), the head of Kagjüpa plunged Karma-kagjü school to inner struggle for power and prestige. Enmity was making progress slowly and hiddenly. Situation graded in clandestine fashion and culminated in 1992 when Ogyen Trinley Dorje was enthroned in Tibet as 17th Karmapa. Some of the regents had doubt about him being the Karmapa and consequently enthroned their own candidate for 17th Karmapa. This act entirely divided the Karma-kagjü school. The primary motive and goal of my dissertation is to find presence of materialistic or postmaterialistic values defined by Ronald Inglehart (Inglehart 1997) in interviews given by 17th Karmapas. I'm looking for difference in values and my methodical instrument is critical discourse analysis. After comparison of interviews of both 17th Karmapas I find the difference in their values. My conclusion is that when Ogyen Trinley Dorje has more materialistic values than Trinley Thaye Dorje. This dissertation contains history of Tibet, history of Buddhism in Tibet and foreign relation interference in practice of Buddhism in Tibet (China and Mongolia). In addition I describe political situation of Tibet and Tibetan exile government which interfere in...

The life of bengal master Atisha before his leaving to Tibet
Mucha, Zbyněk ; Berounský, Daniel (advisor) ; Hříbek, Martin (referee)
and key words Atisha Dipankarashrijnana (982 - 1054 A.D.) was East Indian scholar and reformer of Tibetan Buddhism. Jobo as is also called by Tibetans, is primarily known as the father of the first Tibetan monastic order ever and enjoys special veneration among the monks to this day. This thesis, however, deals only with Atisha's activity in eastern India and omits his Tibetan influence mainly on the grounds that he has been devoted enough attention in the literature already. The main goal is to show Atisha as a person holding a place not only in the history of Tibet, but also in the history of India. - Bengal, Buddhism in Eastern India, Dīpaṃkaraśrījñāna Atiśa (A ti sha Mar me mdzad dpal ye shes in Tibetan), Chandra Dynasty, India, Later Dissemination of Buddhism in Tibet (phyi dar), Tibet, Tibetan Buddhism
